Dr. Prathap C. Reddy is the Non-Executive Chairman of the Company, and has been guiding the Company as its Promoter since its incorporation in 1999. A trained cardiologist, he holds the FCCP and FICA degrees apart from an MBBS degree from the Stanley Medical College in Chennai. After his fellowship from the Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, he went on to work at the Missouri State Chest Hospital where he headed several research programs.
Driven by a deep urge to provide affordable world-class healthcare in India, Dr. Reddy opted to give up his successful practice in the US, and returned to India in the seventies. His mission began with the establishment of the first corporate hospital in Chennai in 1983. Under his stewardship, Apollo Hospitals today has grown to become the largest healthcare provider in Asia with leadership position in every sphere of the healthcare value chain - pharmacies, nursing and hospital management colleges, diagnostic clinics, medical transcription services, third-party administration and telemedicine.
Dr. Reddy’s pioneering approach and tireless efforts has contributed significantly to the emergence of the private healthcare sector in India and is acknowledged as the father of modern healthcare in India. He was instrumental in the amendment of various legislations including amendment of the legislation for cadaver transplants in India. For his contributions, the Government of India conferred Dr. Reddy with the prestigious Padma Bhushan award in 1991. He also won the Sir Neel Rattan Sarkar Memorial Oration Award for medical excellence by JIMA in 1998, and in the same year, was named by Business India as one of the Top Fifty personalities to have made a difference to the country in the fifty years since its independence.
