Supervisor, Hospital Coding
Northeast Region
The Hospital Coding Supervisor is primarily responsible and accountable for outpatient coding and DRG accuracy, timeliness of coding, and utilization of systems used to perform coding functions.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Supervise daily oversight and direction of coding services to ensure complete and accurate coding of diagnoses and procedures for appropriate reimbursement
- Monitoring/Auditing of coding to ensure QA standards are met and/or exceeded
- Provide educational in-services, both internally and externally on coding practices.
- Prepare and report (both verbally and written) on analyses conducted regarding coding services performed
- Develop, support, evaluate, and discipline staff
- Responsible for coordination of appropriate orientation, job training and performance expectations with staff
- Communicate effectively (both orally and in writing) with administrators, physicians, co-workers and other healthcare personnel when providing information and/or services.
- Identifying the need for other coding services/products/systems to enhance coding performance accuracy and efficiency
- Direct, monitor, evaluate and make recommendations for continuous quality improvement
- Participate as team player by demonstrating support to peers, management, and the department’s goals. Attend meetings and training sessions as scheduled
Education, Experience and Licensure:
- Must have at least a minimum 5 years hospital inpatient and outpatient coding and experience utilizing ICD-9-CM/CPT 4 coding
- Must possess a good knowledge of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology and strong knowledge base in complete and accurate clinical documentation with optimization for DRG assignment
- Medical Record experience preferred
- Must have at least two years of previous supervisory experience
- Knowledge of MS Excel and MS Word or equivalent required
- Knowledge of PC operation required
- Adaptable and flexible as well as ability to prioritize work and lead a team of coders through daily operations
